Kyoto Zen Ryokan follows tradition closely — tatami floors, futon bedding, and a kaiseki dinner served in-room. The steam room at the back of the property runs on natural hot spring water piped in from just outside the city.

The private onsen at the back of the property was the perfect end to a day of temple-hopping. Staff explained ryokan etiquette warmly, not stiffly.

Traditional and peaceful. Rooms are minimal by design, which suited us fine — the steam room made up for it.

Authentic ryokan experience — tatami floors, futon bedding, and a kaiseki dinner that was easily the best meal of our trip.
